Unique to this year’s bike format is the use of the scenic perimeter road at Road America for half of the bike course, with its rolling hills, sweeping curves, and attention-grabbing climb. “Road America’s sponsorship of the bike course is what made the event a reality for 2006, ” says Jeff Grady, owner of Elkhart Lake Multisports, Inc. with his wife Mariann Grady. The Osthoff Resort, venue sponsor for the last six events, returns in 2006. “Our relationship with The Osthoff Resort and their staff is important in making this event a success. Typically, triathlons are not conducted on the grounds of a lakeside AAA Four Diamond resort. The athletes love the venue, and it draws them back to Elkhart Lake year after year, ” says Grady. The Elkhart Lake Tourism Commission, also a sponsor of the event, is assisting in volunteer recruitment and local awareness of the triathlon. In addition to the Tourism Commission and Road America, other returning sponsors include Wolf Cycle and Fitness, brightroom.com, and Active.com. USA Triathlon sanctions the event. A triathlete himself, Jeff and his wife insist on emphasizing quality, value, and customer satisfaction first. The event provides each Olympic participant a sweatshirt, water bottle, and lunch. It also offers $2000 in prize money to the top Olympic men and women and $600 in premiums to the fastest Olympic swim, bike, and run legs – uncommon for a regional event. “This event has always been special because it’s challenging enough to appeal to elite athletes as well as novice athletes. Our 2006 format offers better choices for each of them. Having professional athletes as well as national level amateurs participate makes this event exciting for me,” says Grady. “It takes a good event to draw this caliber of athlete.” When all is said and done, Jeff looks forward to one thing – shaking the hand of every participant as they finish. “That makes the whole weekend worthwhile.” Interested athletes may register for the Elkhart Lake Triathlons via mail or on-line. Mail registrations may be downloaded from the event web site (www.ElkhartLakeMultiSports.com) and must be post-marked by June 3rd. On-line registration is open through June 8th.
